The Runaway Hug by Nick Bland

The Runaway Hug’ written by Nick Bland & illustrated by Freya Blackwood

The Runaway Hug is a children’s literature book which is a finalist this year in the early childhood book category. The writer and illustrator work together to create cleaver motion pictures of Lucy (the protagonist) getting ready for bed. Lucy has received her mother’s last hug. So Lucy decides to go around the house and give the hug to her family and then receive the hug back. The complication is encountered when Lucy hugs the dog and to her devastation the dog runs away with Mums last hug. Lucy chases the dog around the house to get the hug back.

‘The Runaway Hug’ is multi-literate as the pictures within the books help capture the sense of family within the book. It is through the pictures that multiple viewpoints are shown as other elements of the family and the house is captured. These pictures capture perspectives within the house that the text does not reveal.
The underlying theme in the book is about family and the idea of a hug being able to run away.  This would make this book very humerous for young children and is a sweet little family story.
