READING SUMMARY 'DONKEY WHO CARRIED THE WOUNDED'

‘The Donkey who carried the wounded’ is a novel that illustrates a time in our history that most of the Australian population would have heard of, but knows very little about. This book conveys the story of World War 1 in Gallipoli, starting from the initial invasion, which was the 25^th of April 1915 until the final evacuation in December 1915. The book is a blend of fact and fiction, presented from several viewpoints. The book is based on the lives of true Anzac legends, Jack Simpson and his donkey Duffy, Richard Henderson and of the deeds the lesser known but equally brave stretcher-bearers. The book expresses power and meaning to the readers through the written language, by using verb groups to make the text more descriptive. This produced the readers to have a more distinctive image of the events and emotions that are occurring in the narrative. This book was written in first person as it gives the readers the chance to experience opinions, thoughts, and feelings made by the main character. Not only does the book contain one character writing in 1^st person, however it illustrates several character viewpoints, by using individual chapters that express a particular character in 1^st person. This allows not only the reader to experience opinions, thoughts and feelings from one character, however it allows the reader to make connections to several characters.
