Green Eggs & Ham Summary


The book ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ by Dr. Seuss is a wonderful book, which can be used to introduce the concept of poems to primary school students. This book is aimed at children between 5-8, as it enhances reading skills. The narrative is about Sam – I – Am trying to bribe his friend to eat a plate of green eggs and ham. For example he asks him whether he would like to eat them in a box, or with a fox; with a mouse, in a house etc. His friend consistently replies that he does not like green eggs and ham until finally surrendering; he tries the dish and realizes that he actually likes green eggs and ham. The language throughout this book is quite simple, with the vocabulary consisting of common everyday words. The book is structured like a poem, as the text illustrates the technique of rhyming the ending word f specific sentences and there is also constant repetition of the words. The book is very memorable, giving the chance for basic readers to understand and comprehend the text fluently. This will create students to feel confident and generate them to attempt to read other books. Throughout the book detailed illustrations are also used to help the students convey the story.
